This is the story of a boy,
A boy who was only fifteen.
He had dreams.
He had ambition.
He had a bright future.
Now he has nothing.
All he can do is look up.
And he looks up,
Looks into the darkness,
The unique darkness only he can see.
He played on the freshman football team.
He planned to play baseball the next year.
Some envied him,
Other laughed and joked along with him,
No one could hate him.
But now, all day, every day,
All he can do is lay on his back,
Always looking toward the sky,
A sky he can never see,
Surrounded on all sides.
There was always a smile on his face,
And he was a religious lad.
He once had to do a project for school
Where he was to outline his past, present and future.
He put on it a picture of Jesus and the cross.
Alone now and forever more,
Alone in his own zone,
A cold and dark place,
A world of nothing,
Simply just plain and empty.
He stayed away from the drugs,
Kept away from the alcohol,
Shunned the cigarettes,
Evaded the bad kids,
And was steering his life the right way.
But that SUV traveling down the highway,
Its driver couldn’t steer away in time.
He struck Mike and laid him out,
And Mike was pronounced DOA,
But he was far from dead.
This one perfect boy
Who made friends with so many
And inspired more
United us all as one
The only time the freshman class of ‘05 ever agreed
Among the mourners,
And the ones who tried to comfort,
And the ones who cried,
And the ones who frowned,
Mike was there.
It was Mike who saddened us.
It was Mike who comforted us.
The happy times helped us all,
And we remember him for those.
How can we ever forget?
But while we have his invisible presence,
And one another,
Both to comfort us,
What does he have?
Nothing but himself in the darkness.
Or has this saint of a child
This law abiding and religious boy
Gone and met his Creator
And his Savior
As he rightly deserves?
All we can do is pray.
Pray he went where he belongs;
Pray he got what we know he deserves
After all he’s done;
And pray we can keep his memory alive.
Rest In Peace Michael Captain
Gone but far from forgotten.
And living on in us all.
